Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a particular instrument to learn on?
There are many options regarding selecting a Piano, Organ or Keyboard to practice on and it doesn't need to be an expensive purchase at all! If you are a beginner you may wish you purchase an inexpensive, modestly priced instrument or perhaps borrow one - you can always 'upgrade' later on! I can offer advice on selecting an appropriate instrument if at all unsure.

How much do I need to practice?
Like learning any new skill the more time you are able to practise the faster your progress with be. Everyone is different in terms of speed of learning and free time available but I would suggest a minimum of 15-20mins a day. That being said we can work with whatever time you are able to commit to.
Am I too old to learn an instrument?
The short answer is No!! There is no upper age limit and it is never too late to learn.
I firmly believe that age is no barrier to learning!!
My oldest student was in their 90s and managed to pass several piano examinations with high marks so definitely no excuse!
What about Exams?
Exams are by no means essential or compulsory! It is entirely up to you if you feel you would like to work towards them. For those wishing to take them I make sure that they are not entered for an exam until they are comfortable, ready and well prepared for.
I have a 100% success rate in exam passes with most achieving high marks.
I mostly use the London College of Music (LCM) exam board but on occasions
the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

Do you teach Theory of Music?
I tend to include a little music theory in the context of the lesson just for general interest
and to aid further understanding.
Higher level practical examinations grades require a pass in the Grade 5 theory examination which
I would be able to help you study for.
How much do lessons cost?
My fees are currently £28.00 per hour or £14.00 for 30 minutes, on a pay as you go basis, or on a monthly basis in advance by cheque or on-line payment. Assuming you have an instrument to practice on, the only other cost would be to purchase a music book. These books are easily obtainable from local music shops or various online stores.
What about cancellations?
Provided that I have at least 24 hours notice I do not charge for cancellations but would appreciate as much notice as possible as sometimes I can fill the space with someone who can’t manage their regular time that week. There may be occasions when I need to change the regular time of a lesson due to my own commitments and reasonable notice will be given.
Do you teach all year round or just in 'term time'?
With the exception of personal holidays or other commitments I teach all year round.
As I teach people of all ages I do not restrict myself to just teaching in term time.
