Online Lessons

Online Lessons

Online lessons are a great alternative to in-person lessons so please read on to find out more...

What are the benefits of online lessons?

Whilst obviously different to face to face lessons, there are several benefits of having lessons online.

Probably the most obvious being in the comfort of your home and not having to travel! Also some students are more relaxed in their own environment.
In the case of learning the organ and keyboard, sometimes it can be beneficial to be able to learn on your own instrument.

What do I need to have an online lesson?

Although it is not too complicated to set up, you will need to do a few things in preparation.

You will need:

  • a tablet (phone will work but will be harder with the smaller screen), laptop or desktop with a camera
    or separate webcam

  • a stand/tripod to position the tablet/phone/computer. Placing on a chair or table is also a possibility.

  • an internet connection

  • a video calling platform e.g What's App, FaceTime etc.

What you'll see

Once our lesson begins, you’ll see a camera providing an overhead view of the piano.  Below, a virtual keyboard display shows which keys are being pressed, making it easy to follow my demonstrations.  This setup also ensures a more personal experience, as you’ll be able to see me explaining things or answering your questions. My setup is quite adaptable, so I can also display sheet music on screen and annotate it for you, just as if you were in the same room.

Your setup

For the best experience, position your screen so you can see me while your camera focuses on the keyboard you’re playing. This could be as simple as placing your device on a table or using a tablet holder attached to a mount. There are plenty of easy options, and I’m happy to help you choose the best one.

I’ve included a few images below showing my setup and a couple from one of my students’ simple, yet effective setup.

As everyones home setup would be different it would be best to have a discussion before the initial lesson
so everything runs smoothly!
